Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.
